It's called "The Cloud," it stands in front of the Fashion Show Mall, and it's a couple hundred feet tall. Las Vegas doesn't do anything by half-measures, good or bad. But this is good.

The pool at the Green Valley Ranch Station Resort. Visitors like sand in their swimming pools, for whatever reason. Southern Californians, I tell ya.

The bar at the new Tabu lounge at the MGM Grand. Like everyting I appreciate about Las Vegas, it reminds me of Logan's Run.

The grand opening of the Palms casino-hotel, last night. The Palms is owned by the Maloof family of Las Vegas; they also own the Sacramento Kings and a shitload of other stuff, so their celebrity friends came out in force. Rumor has it that even Bill Clinton was there, enjoying the free champagne and the company of thousands of young girls in haltertops.

You're --nobody in Vegas unless you have a real big sign. Broadcasting a live feed of Tony Curtis being interviewed on the red carpet. Paris Hilton and spares. The dress Paris is wearing is covered with US $1 million in Palms poker chips. A painted dancer at the entrance to Little Buddha. Who knows who the hell these guys are. I just thought it funny that one of them was trimmed in aluminum.' Human palm trees. Itchy. The end of the party, Little Buddha. I took more shots, but they didn't translate. Meaning: they sucked.

Inadvertantly, these individuals define the lost city of New York.
Taken today, almost two months later.

This is Las Vegas' new Guggenheim Museum, opened last week. It is comprised of two spaces, both designed by Rem Koolhaas: the 63,700-square-foot main hall that's currently showing "The Art of the Motorcycle," and the small Guggenheim Hermitage gallery, nicknamed "The Jewel Box," that shows fine art from both the Guggenheim and Hermitage collections.

Frank Gehry's stainless-steel interior walls. Wheel and guard. Vrooom. Overlooking 'The Trench.' Shiny shiny wall. In 'The Trench,' looking up.
The Guggenheim Hermitage gallery floats above the ground. The walls are sheets of Cor-Ten steel, hung from supports. The paintings are attached to them with giant magnets. No, I'm not joking. It's a separate admission from the motorcycle exhibit in the 'big box.' Both are worth seeing.
